In his mode of visual expression, Brazilian photographer Eduardo Marco constantly searches for what is unseen. His depictions of crumbling facades and overgrown landscapes reveal a hidden beauty that would never be brought to the surface were it not for him. In well-known scenery like the forests of Laos and Sicily, we discover a beauty that has faded into oblivion. Marco’s ability to bring this beauty back to the fore is possible thanks to his mastery of two fundamentally different genres. He learned his craft in the glamorous world of fashion before becoming more and more entrenched in the documentary photography scene.

Marco’s series The Amazon Forest is a combination visual languages: the aesthetically staged and the documentary. Marco transforms the rain forest’s wild growth into a finely composed work of art. In addition to his eye for framing his shots, the flowing forms, textures, and reflections are reminiscent of the balanced aesthetic common in the world of fashion. As a social critique, however, the series demonstrates the typical characteristics of documentary photography. It is almost a warning that places the threatened beauty of the dwindling rainforests right in front of our eyes.

In the floating between genres, between the aesthetic sensibilities of fashion photography and the documentary visual language, it is easy to spot the influence of Marco’s mentors Albert Watson and Nick Knight. Watson has over 250 international Vogue covers under his belt, and Knight works for Christian Dior, Yves Saint Laurent and John Galliano. In addition to their global success in the fashion world, both are also masters of documentary photography, combining glitzy beauty with subtle social criticism, and new modes of visual expression with ethical questions. This results in an extraordinary, inspiring perspective and a constant reinvention of their own photographic styles.
Eduardo Marco learned the photographic trade under star photographers Annie Leibovitz and Nick Knight at London’s renowned Click Studios. His work appeared in fashion magazines including Vogue and Vanity Fair before he began to concentrate on documentary photography. His works has been featured in numerous international exhibitions, shown at the United Nations in Geneva, and exhibited in the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum in Spain. Eduardo Marco lives in Madrid.
